Slovenia – The Roma (Gypsies)
This photo project for Amnesty International highlights the housing conditions and lifestyle of Roma in south-eastern Slovenia, revealing critical social issues. Experts estimate Slovenia's Roma population to be between 7,000 and 12,000, about 0.5% of the total population. The Roma community is diverse, with varying degrees of integration.
The first group is fully integrated and professionally successful. The second group, in north-eastern Slovenia, maintains a traditional lifestyle with good relations with Slovene neighbors. The project focuses on the third group in south-eastern Slovenia, living in illegal settlements or slums with severe conditions, lacking basic amenities like electricity and proper sanitation.
These illegal settlements deny residents access to fundamental human rights, perpetuating their marginalization. The collaboration with Amnesty International Slovenia provided respectful documentation of these marginalized communities, aiming to raise awareness and advocate for improved living conditions and greater societal inclusion.
This project underscores the importance of advocacy and solidarity in addressing systemic inequalities and protecting human rights for all individuals, regardless of background or social status.
