Italy – Armenian Monastery in Venice

The Armenian Monastery in Venice, located on San Lazzaro Island, symbolizes the resilience and dedication of the Armenian people. Despite widespread diaspora due to persecution, Armenians have preserved their cultural, linguistic, and religious ties. The Mechitarists, Armenian Catholic monks on San Lazzaro, have been crucial in preserving Armenian art and scholarship. Founded by Mekhitar of Sebaste in 1716, the monastery became a key printing press and a sanctuary for Armenian culture and spirituality. Today, under Abbot Padre Elia Kilaghbian, about 10 monks continue the mission to protect and preserve Armenian heritage, serving as a beacon of Armenian culture and spirit.
